Abstract accepted for oral presentation.

Conquer? Or avoid?

Sunday, November 13, 2016

"...For most, there was no realistic expectation of ever catching up to their ambitions. In their own eyes, they were never good enough. They were the opposite of complacent. And yet, in a very real sense, they were satisfied being unsatisfied. Each was chasing something of unparalleled interest and importance, and it was the chase - as much as the capture - that was gratifying. Even if some of the things they had to do were boring, or frustrating, or even painful, they wouldn't dream of giving up. Their passion was enduring."

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it."

"The fragmentation of healthcare delivery compounds the problem, and on current trends, the next generation of elders will face it even more acutely. With medical sophistication comes fragmentation; with fragmentation, a diminishing ability to understand medical choices; with rising frustration even deeper dissatisfaction."

A new drug called ixekizumab that clears severe psoriasis.

The authors of the JACI paper speculate that tailored antibody therapy could prove as effective in controlling eczema as ixekizumab has for psoriasis.

Scientists have developed a new blood test that detects early Alzheimer's disease.
With 100% accuracy.

The blood test uses autoantibody biomarkers to accurately detect AD at an early point in the course of the disease when treatments are more likely to be beneficial - that is, before too much brain devastation has occurred.

The test is designed to detect an early stage of AD called Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and distinguish it from similar cases of mental decline that are caused by other factors e.g., vascular issues, chronic depression, alcohol abuse, and the side effects of certain drugs.

The MCI patients had been diagnosed based on having low levels of amyloid-beta 42 peptitde in their CSF, which has been identified as a predictor of rapid AD progression.

Using this biomarker method, the test was also successful in detecting mild-moderate AD (98.7%), early-stage PD (98.0%), MS (100%) and breast Ca (100%).

While at this stage, knowing that you have AD earlier rather than later won't prevent it from developing altogether, but it could give patients the opportunity to sign up for clinical trials for new drugs and treatments, plan out future medical care, and even explore ways to help delay its progression.

Neurosurgery requires a commitment to one's own excellence and a commitment to another's identity. The decision to operate at all involves an appraisal of one's own abilities, as well as a deep sense of who the patient is and what she holds dear. Certain brain areas are considered near-inviolable, like the primary motor cortex, damage to which results in paralysis of affected body parts. But the most sacrosanct regions of the cortex are those that control language.

Usually located on the left side, they are called Wernicke's and Broca's areas; one is for understanding language and the other for producing it. Damage to Broca's area results in an inability to speak or write, though the patient can easily understand language. Damage to Wernicke's area results in an inability to understand language; though the patient can still speak, the language she produces is a stream of unconnected words, phrases, and images, a grammar without semantics.

If both areas are damaged, the patient becomes an isolate, something central to her humanity stolen forever. After someone suffers a head trauma or a stroke, the destruction of these areas often restrains the surgeon's impulse to save a life: What kind of life exists without language?
