Brain damage does not respect race, culture, gender, or socioeconomic group. A massive stroke that affects the left side of the brain will render a physicist with private health insurance and a homeless drug addict paralyzed and aphasic in the same way, although of course the  physicist will probably receive better medical care and rehabilitation. But if the brain damage is severe, no amount of rehabilitation will be able to repair the damage and return the sufferer to his or her former self. Fixing a broken mind requires a cooperative effort and a holistic approach, sometimes with rich rewards and sometimes with only tragedy at the end.
